Cecilia & Plácido
Cecilia Bartoli and Plácido Domingo first met in New York, where each of them performed regularly to an enthusiastic audience. In 1994, they worked on a recording for Deutsche Grammophon of Mozart’s Idomeneo together, accompanied by the Orchestra of the Metropolitan Opera. From then on, their paths crossed regularly.
At the heart of their respective vast repertoires, Cecilia and Plácido share a particular love for Mozart, Rossini and Vivaldi. Puccini’s operas, on the other hand, in which Plácido has so often been heard, do not belong to those we normally associate with Cecilia’s work. And yet, it is in Tosca that Cecilia made her first public solo appearance ever – as a child… This opera is famously set in her hometown Rome, where Plácido took part in an amazing film, set in the original locations and at the original time of Puccini’s opera: nothing is a coincidence!
In 2023, at the salle Garnier, Plácido Domingo honoured Cecilia Bartoli, who had just begun her tenure as director of the Opéra de Monte-Carlo. Together with a number of high-spirited colleagues, they presented an operatic potpourri, which will long remain in the memory of those who were lucky to attend.
Without forsaking their Mediterranean warmth, their musical versatility and riveting charisma, Cecilia and Plácido now return in a more chamberlike format of songs celebrating their Latin heritage. In this, they will be subtly accompanied by French pianist David Fray, who shares their great love for Italy and Spain.

Five facts to discover before the curtain rises
1
Yes, opera and soccer can sometimes go hand in hand. Alongside his friends Luciano Pavarotti and José Carreras, Plácido Domingo sang at four different World Cups (1990 in Italy, 1994 in the US, 1998 in France, and 2002 in South Korea) in the legendary concert series known as “The Three Tenors.”
2
In the 2000s, returning to a vocal range he had embraced in his youth as a singer, Plácido Domingo decided to take on baritone roles, demonstrating his great artistic versatility, always in the service of music. He was one of the few singers to have performed both Germont's son and father on stage in La Traviata, for example!
3
Changing vocal range during one's singing career is not that uncommon. Tenor Jonas Kaufmann began his career as a baritone, Michael Spyres recorded an album entitled “Baritenor,” and many mezzo-sopranos throughout history have been able to perform soprano roles: Cecilia Bartoli was a memorable Donna Elvira in Mozart's Don Giovanni, Pauline Viardot juggled the roles of the Grand Duchess of Gerolstein and Dalila in Saint-Saëns' opera. And even in reverse, soprano Angela Gheorgiu proved to be a remarkable Carmen. Proof that in opera, things are not always as set in stone as one can think...

Cecilia Bartoli and Plácido Domingo are two of the few singers who have made a name for themselves both on stage and at the helm of major opera houses and festivals. Cecilia Bartoli has been artistic director of the Salzburg Festival Whitsun since 2012 and director of the Opéra de Monte-Carlo since 2023. Plácido Domingo, meanwhile, was artistic director of the Washington National Opera from 1996 to 2003, then director of the Los Angeles Opera between 2003 and 2019. This is one of the things these two friends have in common, as they come together on stage for a recital at the Opéra de Monte-Carlo.
5
In addition to leading major major institutions, Cecilia Bartoli and Plácido Domingo are both committed to passing on their knowledge, helping to train young singers who will be the opera stars of tomorrow. Cecilia Bartoli launched the Opera Academies at the Opera de Monte-Carlo in 2024, as well as a record label “Mentored by Cecilia Bartoli.” Plácido Domingo, for his part, was recently appointed Artistic Director of the Puccini Festival Academy in Torre del Lago, was also behind one of the world's biggest artistic competitions: the Operalia competition, sometimes referred to as 'the Olympic Games of opera singing,' open to young singers under the age of 32.
